The Empty Plate

Food is A Human Right

As a cook, as a person who’s job it is to feed people, I feel very strongly about taking action to end hunger and food insecurity in my community. I have been volunteering with Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program for since I moved to Brunswick in 2014 and I’ve been proudly serving on the board since 2020.

Throughout my personal history I’ve witnessed the power of acts of service in this world. As a teenager in Quaker school Communty Service was a vital and important part of my education. I worked with a theatre company for several years bringing free theatre, free art the people of NYC, because those things are not luxuries they are such an important piece of our humanity.

Tikkun Olam - In Judaism, Talumist scholars believe that the world is broken , but not beyond repair, humanity has the power to heal the world, ad we do so through acts of service, acts of kindness, by committing ourselves to the practice of kindness, generosity, of giving we can make the world a better place. This was something my family practiced, whether we called it by that name or not.

I have always wanted to find a way to offer those I am feeding an opportunity to feed our community with me.

I am introducing The Empty Plate.

There is a great abundance in this country, in our community, no one should go hungry. We can work together, we can affect change and make sure those who need help can get it.
